Three patterns show up across the whole table. First, the floor is lower than most buyers expect: a real MVP in most categories starts between $20,000 and $50,000. Second, the ceiling isn't set by code: it's set by the one hard problem each category hides, whether that's Snapchat's AR lens pipeline, Facebook's feed and moderation, or Netflix's content licensing. One driver deserves special mention because it recurs after launch: integrations. The initial build of a third-party integration is only 30 to 40 percent of what that integration costs over two years13. Fewer, cleaner integrations mean a cheaper and more reliable app, both on the invoice and on the run rate. The vocabulary behind these drivers, in plain English:

- Run rate
- What the app costs per month after launch: hosting, content delivery, third-party APIs, and maintenance. For media-heavy apps the run rate, not the build, becomes the dominant cost over time.
- Compliance cost
- The extra build and operating cost of touching regulated data or activity: health records, payments, trading, or crypto custody. It ranges from a modest surcharge to being the entire barrier to entry, depending on the category.

In 2026, US developers bill $60 to $200 or more an hour, Eastern European teams $25 to $85, and South Asian teams $20 to $60, with outsourcing rates trending slightly down year over year. The through-line: budget the build, then budget the business.
